Cognition: Sorting

A great way to bring familiar and seasonal items into the classroom while helping the emerging skill of sorting is to bring in pine cones, gourds and leaves (BPA free plastic ones) and place them in clear containers.  When I did this, I noticed some of the older toddlers in the classroom sorting each object into separate containers during tidy up time.

I found pine cones at the dollar store and the gourds at my local supermarket. The texture of the gourds is great for the exploring toddler's hands  For added sensory exploration, try sprinkling cinnamon or all natural essential oils onto the pine cones.  Ensuring all allergies are considered.
For spring an assortment of flowers with different textures, colours and scents would be fun! Maybe for summer, try sea shells?

How would you begin to sort these? :)
